Artistic and research interests

Max Ryynänen has served as lecturer of visual culture theory since February 2006 (now tenured and senior lecturer). He is the director of the MA program Visual Culture, Curating, and Contemporary Art (, the chair of the Finnish Society of Aesthetics, a member of the board in the International Association of Aesthetics, member of the editorial board in various journals (e.g. The Journal of Somaesthetics, Aesthetica Universalis, RUUKKU, The Finnish Journal of Art Education) and the editor-in-chief of Popular Inquiry: The Journal of the Aesthetics of Kitsch, Camp and Mass Culture ( His methodology is a juxtaposition of continental philosophy, post cultural studies, world philosophy and art theory. His main interests have lately included e.g. contemporary kitsch, class and popular culture consumption, appropriation, lowbrow architecture, the body in contemporary art, ruins and physically stimulating films.
