Artistic and research interests
Kevin Tavin is Professor of International Art Education, and Head of the Department of Art at Aalto University, Helsinki, Finland. Tavin holds a BFA, MEd and PhD in art education. He has taught K-12 and post-secondary courses since 1990. Previous work includes Associate Professor of Art Education at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (1999-2006) and The Ohio State University (2006-2012).
His research focuses on critical multiculturalism, visual culture, critical pedagogy, cultural studies, Nordic art education, and psychoanalytic theory. His work has been published in international art and education journals and books, and presented as keynote and research papers across the globe. Recent books include, Angels, ghosts, and cannibals: Essays on art education and visual culture and Stand(ing) up, for a Change: Voices of arts educators. Tavin has held the office of Coordinator for the Caucus on Social Theory and Art Education and World Council Regional Representative for North America for the International Society for Education through Art.
