Artistic and research interests

I am interested in how strategists can understand and effectively deal with novel challenges and a changing world. My research focuses on two aspects:

  • Search strategies for dealing with uncertainty and complexity, which includes theorizing, heuristics and experimentation
  • Rethinking strategy from the perspective of customers, value propositions and the demand side, which includes strategic bundling to exploit customer-specific synergies; managing complementors and interfaces; and co-opetition in platform ecosystems

My research has been published in the Academy of Management Review, the Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Management, Advances in Strategic Management and the Academy of Management Best Paper Proceedings. See my Google Scholar profile.

I have a D.Sc.(Tech) from Aalto University, a M.Sc.(Tech) in Industrial Engineering and Management from Helsinki University of Technology (today: Aalto University) and a Diplom-Wirtschaftsingenieur degree from University of Karlsruhe (today: Karlsruhe Institute of Technology). I have held visiting researcher positions at University of St.Gallen, Copenhagen Business School and Frankfurt School of Finance and Management.

I have received the Glueck Best Paper Award for the best paper presented at the 2010 Academy of Management Meetings, Strategy Division (best of ~700 submitted) and the Outstanding Reviewer Award from the Academy of Management Strategy Division in 2013-2017. I also serve on the editorial board of the Academy of Management Review (since 2016).
