Artistic and research interests
Behnam is a researcher in energy systems modelling and energy economics. His main focus is to investigate energy policies towards high-level integration of variable renewable energy (VRE). He analyzes sectoral interrelations in energy systems (e.g., heat and power sectors), by developing quantitative energy systems models and applying network theory if needed. In his recent work, he studies the implications of an EU-wide electricity market for national energy planning.
Behnam's work on the analysis of flexibility in energy systems and value of energy storage has led to several international and Aalto-level awards. Together with his coauthors, he has won two best paper awards; one from the 11th International Conference on European Energy Markets (Krakow, Poland), and another from the 9th International Conference on Sustainable Development of Energy, Water, and Environment Systems (SDEWES) (Venice, Italy). He is also the winner of Aalto ENG Best Publication Award 2014 for his high-impact article on the economics of energy storage systems.
