This paper provides a short overview of the fundamental observations and concepts underlying the construction of paper and paper coatings. Parallels are drawn between the known structures to be found already in currently applied fibres, minerals and binders, and the world of nanoscale phenomena. Providing this link between the nanoscale and paper composite structures enables a perspective to be developed, which, together with emerging technologies, can provide the papermaker with an insight for future development. Examples are given of nanopore optimisation, the construction of nanostructures on microscopic particles, and the roles of binder and polymers in colloidal interactions. Additionally, identifying the potential for nanocellulosics in the field of materials technology is considered a major tool for enhancement of multicomponent composites.
