Validation of a 6-DOF Maneuvring model

Abstrakti

We present a rapid 6 DOF modular mathematical model for the estimation of maneuvering trajectories and motion time histories of ships navigating in calm,
deep or shallow waters. Results are compared against experimental records available for: (a) KVLCC2 tanker ship; (b) KCS container ship; and (c) the Office
of Naval Research Tumblehome ship (ONRT). The hydrodynamic coefficients used for KVLCC2 resulted from model-scale experiments [1]. KCS hydrodynamic derivatives were obtained from the combination of semi-empirical equations. For ONRT a novel reference technique and semi-empirical formulations [11],[16] were used. Heave, roll and pitch radiation damping were estimated from a non-linear unified seakeeping and maneuvering time domain tool [12] using numerical decay tests. They were then implemented to the model in the form of critical damping and natural period. Validation of the 6-DOF numerical simulation shows reasonable prediction of ship motions.
