Farmer needs for decision support systems (DSS) were investigated using four focus group interviews, including a total of 15 Finnish farmers. The interviews were analyzed using grounded theory, which produced a selective coding describing the phenomena that influence decision making. The four main coding categories were the effects of profitability, the social network, the plant production- related factors and the operational environment. The results included farmers’ opinions on existing DSS as well as the needs that they have to improve the use of DSS software in farm management. A set of preliminary software requirements were drawn from the results.
