The rise of solo living has recently gained public attention, yet there is little research on the housing needs of one-person households, particularly when examined from the perspective of urban housing design. Based on an interview study (n=68), this paper discusses housing related spatial needs of working aged solo dwellers living in Helsinki, Finland. The paper argues that the social dimension encountered in home environments channels the housing needs of urban solo dwellers in a variety of ways that are connected with the design and planning issues. The results also indicate that the floor plan is far more complex issue than the surveys suggest.
