Threshold induced seismicity on elastic interfaces

Abstrakti

The effect of a detection threshold on avalanches was studied by simulating the depinning of a long-range elastic interface and analyzing the data with various thresholds and no threshold. The focus was on the size and duration distributions of events and particularly on whether the choice of a threshold affects the apparent seismological laws that the avalanches display. The studied laws were
the productivity law and the Omori-Utsu law, which state that earthquakes are followed by smaller events with power-law distributed numbers and times. A threshold was found to split avalanches into series of events that follow these statistics.
