Thermochemical description of antimony and arsenic in the suspension stage of the outokumpu flash smelting furnace

Abstrakti

A detailed thermodynamic analysis on the vapor pressures of antimony and arsenic in sulphidic concentrates was carried out using general Gibbs energy minimizing techniques and critically evaluated thermodynamic data. New experimental information on the vaporization of impurities in complex copper concentrates during oxidation was obtained in a laminar flow furnace as well as in pilot plant campaigns. Specific attention was paid to the behaviour of antimony. The materials treated ranged from standard copper concentrates to complex sulphidic raw materials containing up to 14% Sb and 4% As. A comparison was made of the thermodynamic conditions in the suspension stage of a flash smelting furnace and the subsequent gas line vs. the impurity removal attained and the behaviour of the impurity vapours in the off-gas. The results indicated, that a fraction of antimony vaporizing in the upper part of the furnace condensates in the lower part of the furnace on the falling matte particles. On the other hand industrial data from the Outokumpu Harjavalta copper smelter show the negative effect of the oxygen enrichment as well as the effect of antimony containing inert materials on the elimination of antimony into the gas phase.
