The language of stones: archival imaginaries of a prison

Abstrakti

How to conceive a photographic chronopolitics that would do justice to the intricate and visceral nature of histories and images related to juridical violence? With this question at hand this paper elaborates on a photographic inquiry of a singular architectural site: Kakola, the former central prison of Turku (Finland) that was established in 1853 and ceased its operations in 2007 and is currently being converted into an exclusive and luxurious residential complex. Tracing the complex heterotopic nature of the place and its unsettling histories, the translation from a medium of juridical violence to an exclusive locus of social division (sustained by a commodification and glorification of violence), the paper examines the possibilities of an archival practice both in unearthing disregarded histories and in activating the agential potential of things (the politics of material agentiality).
