Abstrakti
Both total residual chlorine and ammonium were the key drivers of nitrite formation in the drinking water distribution systems (DWDSs) in the cities of Helsinki and Vantaa, in Finland. However, the disinfection chemical did not inhibit nitrification. Nitrite was formed rapidly in the DWDS after the water treatment plant. The highest nitrite concentrations occurred in early summer when the temperature was rising and the total residual chlorine concentrations were at the highest. Low temperatures did not prevent nitrification but only slowed it down.
