Sustainable Bio-based Waste to Energy Supply Chains with Centralized and Decentralized Processing Networks

Abstrakti

This study develops a mixed integer linear programming model that integrates the strategic, tactical, and operational decision levels of the multi-scale supply chain networks in a bio-based waste management context. The model aims to evaluate the potential of biomass utilization for generating biofuel and bioenergy and measure their sustainable implications in decentralized and centralized supply chain configurations. The model aligns the biomass procurement and supply with varying demand, optimizes the inventory levels, effectively assigns resources to operations, optimizes the transportation network, and distributes and sells the produced bio- based products to end-users. The model also optimizes the choice between waste treatment technologies according to their economic impacts. The generalized disjunctive programming technique is used to formulate and optimize the discrete decision-making processes of the proposed supply chain system. The resulting model is solved using GAMS/CPLEX.
