The Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is employed in the analysis of truss or frame 2D towers with respect to the study of both structural and geometrical aspects. Out of a wide variety of optimization algorithms, the PSO stands out as easy to use and modify for solving different problems. The aim of this work is to examine the structural optimization through a PSO-based optimizer with NURBS integrated in both the structural analysis solvers and the PSO. The optimizer has been tested on the size, shape and topology optimization problems of both 2D truss and frame towers. Based on the findings, the functionality of the proposed framework in solving structural optimization problems is assessed. The results of the research suggest that the PSO method can be flexibly used in structural optimization of both straight and curved towers. However, the proposed framework must be adjusted individually for every type of problem. Nevertheless, making small and single alterations in the problem, formulation remains easy and the generation of a great number of feasible solutions is straightforward and quick. This group of solutions can then be used to support the structural and architectural decision-making.
