Sound absorption of slat structures for practical applications

This paper presents a study of sound absorption of slat structures. Acousticians who design spaces for critical listening have often need for precise information about the absorption coefficient of a certain surface structure. For readymade products the measurement data is often available. When using custom slat structures, this is not the case. Isolated, presumably measurement based, absorption values can be found from literature and numerous calculating softwares provide approximations of the absorptive behaviour of regular slat structures. In our experience, they function with moderate structure thicknesses, but even with those, they require experience-based approximation. To provide acoustic designers with more reliable and comprehensive data about the behaviour of slat absorbers, a study with measurements of sound absorption in a reverberation room is conducted. Sound absorption in a reverberation room is measured using ISO standard 354:2003, in one-third-octave bands from 100 Hz to 5000 Hz, using indirect integrated impulse response method. The paper presents the results from the measurements and a discussion. These are complemented with ideas for further studies to develop a tool to predict the absorption coefficient of slat structures.
