Resolving 7 Tensions in-between Design and Engineering Education : Cases for Reflective Studio Practice

Abstrakti

Engineering and Design have foundationally different values, which are reflected in how the respective education as well as the professional practices are organised. Adherence to these values introduces problems for the planning of studies where different pedagogical approaches confront, whilst both design and engineering tasks are explored and projects conducted. It is challenging to develop adaptable didactics that serve both viewpoints and perspectives. This paper firstly identifies 7 major tensions and their theoretical foundations between engineering and design, which stem from the core values of the respective disciplines. Secondly, this paper discusses and elaborates on how the mentioned tensions may be resolved through reflective studio practice, which is showcased through practical examples of interdisciplinary university courses where both design and engineering practice are taught.
