Abstrakti
The chapter by Max Ryynänen and Ksenia Kaverina questions some of the cultural and economic biases in the preservation of built heritage, advocating both perspectives and means for understanding and implementing a more inclusive and democratic approach. The authors bring attention to the worldwide interest in investing in iconic heritage sites and discuss the tools that could help to look at selective preservation efforts critically, through the perspectives of aesthetics and curating.
The first part, “Notes on Preservation as a Historical and Philosophical Practice” discusses the current state of our thinking concerning heritage, triggered, for example, by the Notre-Dame fire and an increasing understanding of the cultural history of heritage thinking, that is, its ethnic, Continental European (upper-class) nature. The authors highlight the origins of heritage thinking and suggest the need for its reevaluation and greater public involvement in rethinking its nature.
The second part, “Negotiating the Value of Heritage” delves into the various facets of preserving built heritage and ways of communicating it to the public. Proposing to apply a curatorial lens to architecture and heritage, the text further examines several artworks and research projects that attune to the aesthetics of preserving and destroying, such as films Spielraum by Jasmina Cibic and Triple C. Editing the Century by Marysa Lewandowska, or project Living Archaeology in Gaza by Forensic Architecture. Seeking for an introspective approach, the authors ask how we can protect what holds value while also addressing and challenging aspects of heritage that on a closer look may seem absurd or outdated.
In conclusion, a need for a more inclusive and culturally self-reflective approach to heritage thinking is discussed through the insights gained from the inquiry. Enhanced historical understanding and awareness of the selective control over heritage could bring about positive change, but the whole idea needs to be renovated to meet today’s standards.
