POTENTIALLY PATHOGENIC FUNGI IN FINNISH EDUCATIONAL BUILDINGS

Abstrakti

Invasive fungal infections may, as a result of the pandemic, represent an emerging global threat. In this study 220 indoor fungal strains from 11 public buildings were screened for pathogenic potential; 54 isolates were potentially pathogenic, 39 strains grew at pH >7 at 37oC, 15 strains did not grow at 37oC at pH>7 but were identified as species suspected as potential pathogens. Potentially pathogenic strains of Aspergillus sections Circumdati, Fumigati, Nigri, and Chaetomium-like isolates were found from 4 ordinary buildings and from 6 buildings connected to moisture problems. Pathogenic Asp. calidoustus, Paecilomyces, Trichoderma and Rhizopus strains were found only in the 6 problematic buildings. Viable airborne pathogenic fungi are a potential health hazard, when exposing vulnerable persons in quantities exceeding their resilience.
