A TSO is responsible for system security and reliability and therefore it has to ensure the correct operation of new WAMS applications before it can make operational decisions based on the applications. The power system may have different power flow patterns and it is used with different grid topologies and generator connections, and the applications have to perform in these different circumstances. The paper presents how a TSO has tested three damping estimation methods in conjunction with spectral analysis methods in order to learn how well they perform and if they can be taken into operational use for increasing system awareness and system security. The paper describes different oscillation incidents, presents the performance of the methods in different oscillatory cases and discusses the main findings from the cases.
