Background
Near-infrared (NIR) hyperspectral imaging (HSI) is a fast, robust, and non-destructive technique to estimate wood polymers reliably. The NIR HSI images contain a three-dimensional structured dataset known as a hypercube which depicts the two-dimensional spatial variation in terms of pixels and the NIR spectral channels as the third dimension. Inspired by Maurer and Leuenberger (2009), non-destructive NIR HSI was used to visualise the heterogeneity of the thickness and grammage (GSM) of the nanocellulosic high-consistency enzymatic fibrillation of cellulose (HefCel) (Pere et al., 2020) surface coating of birch (Betula pendula) (Pramreiter et al., 2020) veneers (BVs) by varying the no. of coating layers. However, finding studies that use NIR HSI for nanocellulose-coated wood and wood products is challenging. (Mäkelä et al., 2020; Schimleck et al., 2022)
