Abstrakti

Our research in knowledge acquisition was motivated by problems encountered with the intelligibility of current CAD systems and their consequent under-employment. To assist in formulating problems for our mechanical CAD systems, a study into problem formulation expertise was undertaken. However it was found that problem formulation could not be studied independently from other aspects of the design process. Hence we increased our scope of research. The result is a general theory of kinematic design expertise. We have a method for representing the expert's view of the problem situation as it evolves through the design process. Thus we have a deep theory of kinematic design expertise that will serve as a framework for a problem-formulation model specification, and perhaps for a pecification of an entire mechanism design system.
