Method and device for large rotor bearing force measurement

In the paper industry, the dynamic characteristics of flexible rotors has been widely investigated for decades. Rotor vibrations induce noise, decrease the lifespan of bearings, produce additional load to structures, and can directly affect the end product as in a paper production. Therefore, vibration must be avoided and reduced to its minimum.Accelerometers are commonly used to measure the frequencies and the amplitudes of the vibrations. Anyway, accelerometers are not capable of detecting forces like periodic radial bearing forces created by rotor vibrations. Thus, these forces are typically unknown or estimated by simulations. Lack of exact information leads to a situation, in which under-and over-dimensioning can occur, hindering effective material use and lifespan optimization.To tackle this problem a measurement device was designed and built to measure radial bearing forces of large-scale rotors, which produce considerable dynamic forces and have lower natural frequency compared to smaller rotors. In addition to radial bearing force measurement, the device contained horizontal stiffness adjustment, which allows investigation on the effects of a foundation on rotor behavior.With the developed measurement device could be revealed the harmonic components of the measured force, which could be applied to eliminate excitation sources.
