Material Microstructure Effects in Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical Modelling of Bentonite

This paper discusses the introduction of effects related to the bentonite microstructure into a new fully coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) finite element code. After a brief review of the governing balance equations and their implementation, the paper discusses in greater details the material microstructure effect on the hydraulic behaviour of bentonite and how to incorporate it in the modelling framework. Based on the experimental data for the MX-80 bentonite, the parameters needed for the new formulation are calibrated and employed in modelling of a constant volume infiltration experiment. The obtained swelling pressure from the numerical simulation is in good agreement with experimental results and improved when compared to the simulation which does not take into account bentonite microstructure. The framework enhancement allows also for a better understanding of the microstructure role in the macroscopically observed bentonite behaviour.
