Project on display: Building with misfit wood

Built environments today rely on standardised materials, shapes and structures. While providing ease of use and production, uniform aesthetics leave little room for imperfection and irregularity.

This project challenges the current norms and standards through exploring the potential of whole wood – organically shaped wood that deviates from the industry standards, currently either burned, left to forest or processed into cellulose.

The structure is made by sawing an oak tree into four sections turned inside out. It experiments with traditional carpentry using robotic machining, seeking ways to utilise whole wood as mass-tailored structural elements.
