This paper explores the concept of Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication and its potential to enable smart devices to communicate and collaborate autonomously via a case study. Specifically, the paper focuses on the integration of industrial equipment using an Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) capable of M2M communication between non-integrated industrial machines: an AGV and a crane. The AGV used in the study was a three-wheel differential drive mobile robot which applied a 3D-lidar and an ultra-wideband radio signal system for navigation and localization. To demonstrate the M2M capabilities of the AGV, M2M communication between the AGV and the crane and the ultra-wideband radio signal system was established and tested. The results indicate that an AGV offers a flexible solution for automating tasks that involve industrial equipment which are not integrated for communication. The results provide a starting point for further research and project work involving M2M communication and AGVs in similar tasks and environments.
