May 2010, The Trondheim Academy of Fine Art The Katyn massacre (Polish: zbrodnia katynska, Russian: ????????? ????????), was a mass murder of Polish nationals carried out by the Soviet secret police NKVD in April-May 1940. It was based on Lavrentiy Beria's proposal to execute all members of the Polish Officer Corps, dated 5 March 1940 and signed by Joseph Stalin. The number of victims is estimated at about 22,000. 10th of April 2010, a Tupolev aircraft of the Polish Air Force crashed near Katyn, killing all 96 people on board. These included the Polish president Lech Kaczynski and his wife, Former President-in-exile Ryszard Kaczorowski, and relatives of victims of the Katyn massacre. They were on route from Warsaw to attend an event marking the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre.
