Internal Friction Study of Phase Transformations and Hydrogen Effects in Super duplex stainless Steels

    Abstrakti

    Internal friction method was applied to study phase transformations and secondary phase precipitation in super duplex stainless steels (DSS). Rather well documented SAF 2507 duplex stainless steel was selected for the testing. Several internal friction peaks were detected. Two peaks observed at lower temperatures were recognised as nitrogen Snoek peaks in ferrite and austenite phases. The high-temperature peak was attributed to the Zener relaxation in ferrite phase. Based on the analyses of the area under peaks, the conclusions on the temperature range of the secondary austenite formation were drawn. Using internal friction method, hydrogen behavior in the austenite phase was studied. A complex Snoek-like peak caused by hydrogen was observed in the austenite phase. The effects of secondary phase precipitation on the hydrogen transport are discussed.
