Hybrid satellite-terrestrial MIMO for mobile digital broadcasting

Traditionally, broadcasting services are being offered by either satellite or terrestrial systems. Providing national or regional wide area coverage by satellite is cost efficient, but achieving connectivity to mobile terminals located in densely built environments is not possible due to shadowing of the signal. Terrestrial networks, on the other hand, allow coverage in this environment, but building nationwide terrestrial networks is too expensive. Therefore, hybrid satellite-terrestrial networks are considered currently, complementing the features of both network types.
