Future Food Culture exhibition

FUTURE FOOD CULTURE Powders and pills. Shit, hugs and thrills. Our lives are changing. Our systems and sources are changing. The way we work, the way we live and the way we produce and distribute food is changing. Traditions and existing rituals seem to lose their meaning and their initial intentions. As globalisation increases, we see food culture detached from their geographical roots and expressed in subcultures carried by new media. Do we need new rituals to texture our lives and give meaning and expression to our identity? Food culture is a set of rules that is understood by a certain community expressed through a choreography using predetermined tools. It is deeply rooted in our psychology but it is not unchangeable. To a certain extent, we are blind to internalised food culture but we can project new cultures into the future to reflect upon and understand our present. This exhibition showcases ideas, experiments, and concepts created by Aalto ARTS MA students during the “Experiments for the Future Food Culture” workshop week in November 2015. The workshop was organised by the Media department and the graphic design unit together with Dutch food and eating designer Marije Vogelzang. The workshop was supported by Grafia ry. Visiting teacher: Marije Vogelzang Responsible teacher: Heidi Uppa
