A mistake occurs and turns the physical, repetitive - and possibly violent - activity of chopping wood into the act of embracing some/body or some/thing. The presentation circles around the struggle of the bodies as a machine - human and non-human bodies - to find a language, the loss of language and its implications on social structures.
The series I was told I chop wood like e ballet dancer which is part of my doctoral research is aiming to approach the proximities of: belongings, care, vulnerabilities and violence. The work is following the origin of the word concert – to contest, dispute (with) as well as agreement in action – and are pointing towards the conflicts that are often present in collective formations.
A friend said “hug wood” when referring to the above mentioned work - shortening down the Swedish word for chopping which is hugga. To embrace something or somebody takes the place of the chopping. The noun of hugga in Swedish is hygge which often refers to a harvested forest area. Comparing it to the meaning of the word hygge in Danish and Norwegian which is a comfortable mood, coziness, often described as simple pleasures and ”a form of everyday togetherness”.
