Abstrakti

This article examines the biochemical structure of celluloid film over time through the concept of filmic symbiosis—a term that describes the dynamic interactions between film materials and microbial agencies. The study explores how organic components within celluloid film engage in symbiotic relationships with microorganisms, particularly under conditions of decay and preservation. By analyzing historical cases of film deterioration and experimental filmmaking practices that embrace biological interventions, such as using bacteria to create unique film textures, this research considers how microbial activity shapes the materiality of film. Inadequate storage of a film can lead to the growth of mold or fungi, which consume the organic components in the base or emulsion and ultimately degrade the film. Special emphasis is placed on celluloid material properties and the indirect ways in which the organisms contributed
to the filmmaking process. A particular focus is given to the film preservation techniques to preserve the integrity of film materials throughout time, with a primary emphasis on microbial agencies. This article additionally focuses on experimental filmmakers who work directly with nonhuman agents in analogue filmmaking because of the film’s perishable biochemical structure. Ultimately, it aims to understand and anticipate the possible expansions of the concept of filmic symbiosis with experiments.
