Feasibility of fabric filters in reducing dust emissions from kraft recovery boilers

Abstrakti

The objective of this work was to study the feasibility of fabric filters for recovery boilers when very low dust emissions of less than 10 mg/Nm3 at 6 % O2 are required. The economic feasibility was evaluated by conducting life cycle cost analyses for both electrostatic precipitator systems and fabric filter systems in three different recovery boiler sizes. The technical feasibility was evaluated through a literature review and discussions with suppliers. The results show that fabric filters could be an economically feasible alternative to electrostatic precipitators under certain conditions. The major concern about the technical feasibility is that the submicron particle size and monodisperse particle size distribution of the recovery boiler dust could lead to high pressure drop over the filters and difficulties in the regeneration of the filter bags. Therefore, injection of an additive upstream of the fabric filter has been proposed to improve dust cake properties and ease the operation of the fabric filter. Economic feasibility was considerably affected by the need of an additive. The life cycle cost of fabric filter system was lower than for the electrostatic precipitator system only if the necessary amount of additive was small or if the additive could be received free of charge.
