The velocity and droplet size of black liquor spray affect the behaviour of the recovery boiler. Large droplets may hit the char bed or the opposite wall without drying. Droplets with the proper velocity, direction, and size will hit the char bed at the desired location and with the required chemical composition, thus ensuring best reduction efficiency. Spray velocity and an estimate of droplet size are presented for high solids content black liquor when spraying occurs under flashing conditions. Results are presented for two black liquor temperatures, three mass flow rates, and six spray locations. Experimental results are considered from the perspective of char bed development and droplet density.
