Experimental validation of failure criterion for large complex shell structures

Abstrakti

Element size sensitivity of shell elements employed in the non-linear finite element (NLFE) crash simulations of large structures has been one of the key issues in the accidental limit state analysis lately because of its strong effect on simulation accuracy. Recently it was found that scaling the failure strain based on the combined effect of element size and stress state can effectively handle the mesh size effect. In this study we present additional validation simulations as well as comparison with experimental results. Respective structures were large-scale conventional ship side structure previously experimentally tested for right-handed 90-degree collision and unstiffened panel for which experimental results are available. Comparative simulations are per-formed with GL critical through thickness strain failure criterion. The comparisons reveal that NLFE calculations capture the measured response with good accuracy. The present approach provides consistent results for both, large-scale structure and smaller structural component.
