Abstrakti

Advancing autonomous ship technology, this paper focuses on automatic emergency stoppage operation. A specialized miniature copy of an icebreaker, equipped with relevant sensors for obstacle detection, is used for testing control algorithms for emergency stopping and speed reversal. In specific reversing azimuth propulsors 180o, azimuth propulsors speed reversing, and a hybrid approach was tested. In this way, non-linear behaviors were studied through physical tests in the Aalto Ice and Wave Tank, highlighting novel pathways for research in emergency stopping in a variety of ice operations and scenarios.
