The three Human Cities exhibitions held at Aalto University in September, 2017, display three different scales of participatory design: European, Finnish and Global. The integrative theme in the role of Aalto University in all of these exhibitions has been structural, systemic, contextually sensitive social innovations for user-based architecture.
The Exit School of Architecture exhibition, also held in Dipoli, presents a local Finnish approach to participatory design in a systemic manner. We have studied the interplay between architects and their clients with an emphasis on shared values and reciprocal communication, based on shared cultural mentality between the client-user and the designer. This approach emphasises local cultural characteristics of user-based design and aims at long-term improvements in the understanding and creation of meaningful participatory projects and milieus with local identity.
