When people from different linguistic, educational, and cultural backgrounds do business, they often use English as a shared business lingua franca. Professionals in multinational corporations and small companies alike draw on English as a business lingua franca (BELF) in various types of business activities and international networks. Research on interactions in these settings has focused on meetings and email communication, illustrating the centrality of BELF competence in getting the job done. The findings contribute to our understanding of communication strategies needed in different kinds of professional tasks and genres and shed light on the development of BELF competence over time.
