This one-day workshop examines the notion of Participatory Design (PD) within Animal Computer Interaction (ACI), drawing from the well researched area of PD in Human Computer Interaction (HCI). Increasingly, work in ACI is being labeled as “participatory” where the animal(s) involved are considered co-designers. This is often in the context of broadening participation models or drawing parallels towards established PD methods in HCI. However, what this means for ACI is an on-going conversation within the community. The aim of this workshop is to push forward discussion of what “participation” means in the context of animal users, whatever this may be. The workshop aims to draw input from not only ACI practitioners but those of the broader HCI community, who may be stakeholders in protecting, expanding, and/or redefining established PD definitions. The output of this workshop will a questioning of participation methods, models and roles that animals can take, with an aim towards advancing how ACI methodologies are situated within broader HCI research.
