Despite its ubiquitous presence, the concept of the everyday has
been notoriously difficult to define. While our everyday is, of course,
that which is always closest to us, it is in another sense that which
is furthest away, as that which is constantly overlooked, dominated
by routine, habit, and those ordinary experiences that settle into the
background of our daily lives. This is only complicated by the fact
that the everyday is also a relational term: what is everyday for me
may not constitute an everyday experience for another, furthermore
that which is unique or unusual to me now may, with prolonged experience,
come to define the new horizons of an everyday life. We can
see even by this cursory explication that the notion of the everyday
invites a dichotomy between the familiar and the strange, the usual
and the unusual, and the ordinary and the extra-ordinary. And it is
precisely this binary approach, which has lurked beneath discussions
of the everyday, including the on-going debates about the scope of the
everyday within the field of everyday aesthetics, that this article aims
    to challenge.
