Chemical methods for controlling the oil absorption two-sidedness of paper were studied. The main items of interest were oil absorption, air permeability and the two-sidedness of the absorption properties of SC paper. The chemicals tested were modified waxy maize starch, carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and a mixture of CMC and polyamideepichlorohydrin resin (PAE). Both dried and moist (press dryness, 50% solids) SC sheets were used. Chemicals dissolved in water were applied to the paper surface using a spray method. The results showed that it is possible to control the oil absorption two-sidedness of paper. Moreover, the absorption properties of the two sides can be controlled separately, most-effectively through the use of a small chemical amount. With a small chemical amount absorption control can be executed without the harmful effect of water causing the fibers to swell and with little impact on the required drying capacity. The reactive group in the waxy maize starch was found to have an effect on the absorption behavior.
