Abstrakti

Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) with integral ballasts have been available in the markets of developed countries for about 3 decades. On the other hand, they have been introduced to the markets of develop-ping countries recently and they are not yet widely used. They consume about 75-80 % less energy than their incandes-cent equivalents providing the same level of services. At the moment, LED based lighting technology is an emerging technology and they show very promising energy efficiency over the existing technology. This article discusses the benefits that are possible to achieve by replacing incandescent lamps with CFLs. Bangladesh has been taken as an example to discuss the possibilities of achieving benefits by the end-users as well as the utility and the government. Thus, economical and social development benefits by replacing incandescent lamps with CFLs have been discussed. The possibility and scope of using LED lamps is also discussed.
