In this interdisciplinary project various dynamical processes occurring in the context of three problems in materials science will be studied theoretically and by numerical simulations. Domain wall dynamics in micro- and nanoscale ferromagnets, plastic deformation of crystalline solids, and friction between two surfaces in contact all exhibit rich and interesting physics, which also has important practical implications in engineering and technology. For each of the systems studied, the present project, done in collaboration with some of the top scientists in the field, aims to use a combination of state-of-the-art numerical techniques and advanced statistical analysis to clarify a number of open questions of both fundamental and practical importance.
