How to increase the use of low CO2 emissions soil improvement methods: development of new design procedures based on advanced Material Point Method simulations.

Tiivistelmä

Construction is responsible for 11% of global CO2 emissions mainly due to cement production (8% of global CO2 emission). To reduce cement use, the project will use and enhance the Material Point Method to simulate ground improvement methods. Numerical replication of small-scale experiments and in-situ observations will help to develop new design methods. The new design methods will extend the applicability areas of low CO2 emissions ground improvement and lead to a reduction of concrete piles use as a foundation solution for structures. The research will help to reduce the amount of necessary cement in soil mixing ground improvement method and provide better design methods for dynamic compaction and dynamic soil exchange - sustainable ground improvement methods that do not use cement. The project involves 5 industrial partners and researchers from 3 universities (excluding Aalto) and will lead to a transfer of knowledge between project partners and the public.
