Development of higher education of solid-liquid separations

The need for this particular educational program is motivated by industrial challenges due to more stringent environmental requirements and getting equipment to work in more challenging environments. Potential solutions in solid-liquid separation management to these challenges are the wide range of new technologies, which will often need to be combined to isolate the main products from multi-component solutions in a cost-efficient and energy-efficient manner and the range of new realtime process monitoring technologies. The issue is that most of these technologies need to be trialed at a bigger bench or pilot scale than most university laboratory-scale equipment allow. Furthermore, doctoral students need to know the upscaling challenges as well as industrial processes to get innovations out of universities and into industrial use (innovation management processes). The course on solid-liquid separation management to be developed brings together a multicultural group of Doctoral-level students to learn, discuss and develop new ideas in a new pedagogical concept. Simultaneously project work in teams of collaborators positioned throughout Europe develop a new idea to be tested in real life using the research facilities available at the academic or industrial partner sites.
