The project is focusing on uncovering the atomic site point group asymmetry induced tunable second-order nonlinear photoresponse (SONP) in centrosymmetric 2D materials. It will revolutionize the current physical understanding of SONP and broaden the range of selectable materials for SONE and related applications by manipulating the local atomic site asymmetries. The success of the project would provide a firm foundation for a cornucopia of emerging technological advances, such as quantum photonics and photovoltaics. Further, the obtained results and knowledge would also be applicable to other physical properties previously believed to exist only in systems with broken spatial-inversion symmetry, such as unconventional Ising superconducting, piezoelectricity and quantum nonlinear Hall effect.
