Autotelic Creative Artificial Intelligence

Creative AI such as ChatGPT or Midjourney has become a tool for many of us. However, by mimicking our creativity, it may flatten our creative expression, motivation and skill development. The project seeks to overcome these issues by exploring autotelic creative artificial intelligence (AI) as an alternative to present systems. This new kind of AI will be creative differently from us, and independent of our data as examples of human creativity. The multidisciplinary team will guide its development through art which critically explores autotelic creative AI utopias and dystopias. Via exhibitions, the public can partake in shaping their future with such AI. The project can advance the grand challenge of AI achieving true creative autonomy, inform new interaction paradigms in Human-Computer Interaction, and foster insights into human and animal creativity. It has the potential to truly expand our creativity, which is valuable also if the threats of present creative AI do not materialise.
