Sophie Pitman is a Postdoctoral Researcher on the ERC Project, Refashioning the Renaissance: Popular Groups and the Material and Cultural Significance of Clothing in Europe 1550–1650, based at Aalto University in Helsinki, Finland. She was previously a Lecturer in History and Postdoctoral Scholar on the Making and Knowing Project at Columbia University, and received her PhD in History from Cambridge University in 2017.

Sophie works on early modern clothing and material culture and is leads the material and digital reconstruction experiments on the Refashioning the Renaissance Project. She is also curating the Refashioning the Renaissance exhibition. As part of the project, she is also researching extant objects of popular fashion across Europe, and is also exploring how imitation materials enabled the non-elite to dress fashionably. She is interested in reconstruction as a methodology for historians.

Sophie is working on a monograph about clothing in early modern London, as well as projects on tailoring, dyes and colour in the early modern period. She has published on ephemeral art, luxury consumption and self-fashioning in a seventeenth century account book, and on English sumptuary laws and is currently co-editing a volume on 'Making Space in Early Modern Europe' with Tianna Uchacz and Colin Murray.
