Welcome to see my profile! My name is Mika Järvinen, and I have the Doctoral Degree in Mechanical Engineering (Energy, Helsinki University of Technology, 2002). I work currently as an Associate Professor and the Head of Energy Conversion and Systems research group in Aalto University. I am also the vice-head of the Department of Energy and Mechanical Engineering, and I have had the pleasure to work as the Director of Aalto's H2 Innovation Center since it's founding, September of 2023. Outside of the work I am nature enthusiastic, wanna-be musician, I like long walks and shorts runs, I like to build and restore things (motorcycles, electronics, scale models, designing hands-on experimental projects for teaching purposes, etc.), and I like cooking.

During my career, I have been actively searching new co-operational partners and fields of technology to extend the research selection that we can offer. For example, when being involved with energy, pulp and paper, biomass, metallurgy, waste management, and wind power and other renewable energy areas gives  continuity and flexibility over longer periods of time. This also helps to keep my mind open and it is easier to keep up motivation. I want to base research work and also teaching on good knowledge on basic sciences: physics, thermodynamics, chemistry, mathematics and programming skills. If you know these well, there are no limitations on what field you can operate. Of course, it is not possible to be a real expert on everything, so you also need partners.

Perhaps the most important personal achievement is the book we published with my partner Hanna Paulomäki 2025 "Renewable Energy Engineering within Planetary Boundaries - A textbook for energy engineers", published by Springer Nature. This 3-years long writing process was very interesting and opened my eyes for better understanding what sustainability really means and how the current poly-crises requires multi-disciplinary solutions. The book is fully Open Access so please upload and join the journey with us. Here's the link:

At the moment my own research focuses on carbon capture and storage by oxyfuel combustion and Ca-looping CO2 capture, impacts of large scale-wind production, and production of Sustainable Aviation Fuels, several P2X solutions, energy storage systems, and H2 technologies.
