Antti V. Räisänen received the Doctor of Science (Tech.) degree in electrical engineering from the Helsinki University of Technology, TKK (now Aalto University), Espoo, Finland, in 1981. In 1989, he was appointed Professor Chair of Radio Engineering with TKK, after holding the same position pro tem in 1985 and 1987–1989. He has been a Visiting Scientist and Professor with the Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory (FCRAO) and University of Massachusetts at Amherst (1978–1979, 1980, 1981), Chalmers University of Technology, Göteborg, Sweden (1983), University of California at Berkeley (1984–1985), Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and California Institute of Technology, Pasadena (1992–1993), the Paris Observatory and University of Paris 6, Paris, France (2001–2002), and Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Spain (2013--2014).

He retired from Aalto University professor position on October 1st, 2018, but continues his research and supervision actvities within the areas of millimeter-wave and THz components, antennas, receivers, measurements, etc. at the School of Electrical Engineering, Aalto University, Department of Electronics and Nanoengineering and Millimetre Wave Laboratory of Finland—ESA External Laboratory (MilliLab). He has superised a large number of master and doctoral students: under his supevision 54 students have received the doctor's degree. He has authored or coauthored over 500 scientific or technical papers and seven books, e.g., Radio Engineering for Wireless Communication and Sensor Applicatons (Artech House 2003) and Semiconductor Terahertz Technology: Devices and Systems at Room Temperature Operation (Wiley 2015).

The Centre of Smart Radios and Wireless Research (SMARAD), which he led at Aalto University, obtained the national status of Center of Excellence (CoE) in Research for 2002–2007 and 2008–2013. He was Head of the Radio Laboratory of TKK (1987-2007) and Head of the Department of Radio Science and Engineering of Aalto University (2008-2016). In 1997, he was elected the Vice-Rector of TKK (1997–2000).

Dr Räisänen has been conference chairman of several international microwave and millimeter-wave conferences including the 1992 European Microwave Conference and the 2016 Global Symposium on Millimeter Waves. He was an associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques (2002–2005). He was a member of the Board of Directors of the European Microwave Association, EuMA (2006–2008 and 2009–2011). He served as Chair of the Board of Directors, MilliLab from 1995 to 2018.

He is Fellow of IEEE since 1994 and Fellow of the Antenna Measurement Techniques Association (AMTA) since 2008. He was the recipient of the AMTA Distinguished Achievement Award in 2009. The Chair of Exellence by the University of Carlos III of Madrid was awarded to him in 2013. He has received two Decorations from the President of the Republic of Finland: Knight First Class of the Order of the White Rose of Finland (2001) and Commander of the Order of the Lion of Finland (2017). In 2017 he received the European Microwave Association (EuMA) Distinguished Service Award and was conferred Honorary Doctorate of the University Carlos III of Madrid (festivities on January 30th, 2018). In his retirement party in September 2018, he received the Medal of Helsinki University of Technology (#128).

Other interests: Forestry and marathon running. So far, he has completed 123 marathons; won the bronze medal in the Veterans' National Championship marathon (over 65 years class) on August 5th, 2018 with time 3:45:58.
