Stiches of the Past: Reimagining Early Modern Fashion by Reconstruction

This talk focuses early modern knitted stockings, and explores how experimental reconstruction can extend and enrich the evidence of the archives in the study of early modern fashion. Drawing on the Refashioning the Renaissance project’s research and knitted stockings citizen science initiative, it investigates how combining archival research with hands-on reconstruction helps to fill the gaps left by fragmentary documentary and material records. By engaging knitters and scholars in recreating early modern knitted stockings from surviving patterns, inventories, and technical descriptions, the project recovers lost artisanal knowledge and reveals how ordinary craftspeople participated in fashion culture.
